FLOOD IN PAKISTAN

The worst floods in the history of Pakistan have affected an estimated 20 million people (U.N. report). According to U.N. estimates, 6 million people have not received any relief aid. The U.N. has also confirmed the waterborne disease cholera in the disaster zone on 13 August, 2010.

CCHD is addressing survival needs of the most vulnerable groups in flood affected areas of Southern Punjab in collaboration with the Bait ul Mal, Ministry of Health, Armed forces, District Governments and local NGOs. These vulnerable groups are invisible to many and their number is in thousands. They are surrounded by water or are stranded on high grounds near the floodwater in remote areas. They are without food, shelter, medical aid and are living under the open sky.

Our task has become multifold in this situation:

1. Provision of direct services, which include medical camps, food items, clothing, etc through CCHD camps

2. Coordination among local organizations and the government for supplies of the needful

3. Making doctors and other medical staff available to local organizations

4. Identification of the vulnerable groups for extension of relief services

5. Media monitoring and media messages to encourage relief actors/organizations

We are struggling to provide them shelter, food, clothing and medicine through our own resources and assistance from the local philanthropists. We appeal for SUPPORT from all humanitarian organizations and individuals to help us in meeting their needs. You can contact us at info@cchd.org.pk

"There are millions of people needing food, clean water and medical care and they need it right now. Clearly at this point in time the overall relief effort cannot keep pace with the overall scale of the emergency," said Jacques de Maio, head of operations for South Asia at the International Committees of the Red Cross (ICRC).
